Cryotherapy is a freezing technique to remove abnormal cells and is commonly used to remove genital warts and to treat cervical dysplasia, a growth of precancerous cells on the cervix, and is an almost painless procedure.
When Do Doctors Use Cryotherapy?
Doctors recommend cryotherapy to remove abnormal cervical cells, which are often caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). Although it is not cancer, cervical dysplasia has the potential to develop into cervical cancer.
Cryotherapy is also used to “freeze” off genital warts, just like warts on the hands or feet.
Cryotherapy for Cervical Dysplasia (Erosion)
The doctor inserts a speculum into the vaginal canal to widen it and uses a small probe to identify the abnormal cells and destroy them with liquid nitrogen. The entire procedure takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
Cryotherapy for Cervicitis
Cervicitis is an inflammation and irritation of the cervix caused by sexually transmitted infections, trauma, frequent douching or exposure to chemical irritants. Cervicitis often causes no symptoms at all, but some women will experience pain during sexual activity, itching, bloody discharges & spotting and bleeding between periods.
Cryotherapy for Genital Warts
Our doctor will simply apply liquid nitrogen directly to your warts. A burning or stinging sensation is common. Cryotherapy of genital warts can sometimes cause blistering.
After cryotherapy, you may experience some soreness, swelling, or pain. The dead tissue will usually shed and fall off.
Cryotherapy for SKIN TAGS
Cryotherapy is a tried and tested skin tag removal technique for removing skin growths, such as skin tags. The process is easy, comfortable and over in a matter of minutes. After the treatment, your warts, skin tags or other lesions will scab over and fall off within one to two weeks.
Follow up after your cryotherapy session.
Most women are fully healed two to three weeks after cryotherapy. Talk to our doctor about any follow-up appointments to make sure all of the abnormal cells have been removed.
A pessary is a plastic device, similar to a vaginal contraceptive diaphragm. It is a low risk treatment option, which either lifts the bladder or apply compression to the urethra during activities that can cause leakage.
Vaginal pessaries can help with:
- Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP):Provide support for vaginal or uterine prolapse.
- Incontinence & Bladder control problems: The ring pessary, an inexpensive, easy-to-manage, and widely available option, is effective treatment for both stress urinary incontinence and overactive bladder.
- Bowel Control Problems: Help to improve bowel control symptoms.
There are numerous shapes and sizes of pessaries to meet the individual support requirements of different patients. Our team will guide you in selecting a comfortable fitting pessary from a wide range of available options.
Pessaries are a low risk treatment option when compared to surgery for symptomatic UI. However, pessaries require ongoing care to avoid problems with vaginal infection, ulceration or bleeding. A neglected pessary can result in erosions through the vaginal wall into the bladder or rectum. About half of the women who are successfully fitted with a pessary continue to use it on a long-term basis.
Are You a Good Candidate for a Pessary?
Is a pessary a good option for you? Typical incontinence pessary users are women who:
- Need temporary help with urine leakage during exercise.
- Have mild symptoms and want to avoid surgery for the moment.
- Have health problems that make the risks of surgery too great.
- Need to delay surgery and are uncomfortable from their incontinence.
If you think you require a pessary or have any queries, our doctor is available to address your concerns.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a treatment used to relieve symptoms of menopause. It replaces the natural female hormones that decrease with age (perimenopause), if the ovaries have been removed (surgical menopause) or if periods have stopped for more than a year (menopause).
The main benefit of HRT is that it can help relieve most of the menopausal symptoms, such as:
- Hot flashes & Night sweats
- Mood Swings
- Vaginal Dryness
- Decreased Libido
Many of these symptoms pass in a few years, but they can be very unpleasant and HRT can offer great relief for many women. It can also help prevent weakening of the bones (osteoporosis), which is more common after menopause.
There are many different types of HRT options (including tablets, skin patches, gels and vaginal creams, pessaries or rings) and finding the right one for you can be tricky. Our doctors can advise to help you choose which type is best for you.
In addition to HRT, Zia Medical Center also offers non-hormonal & complementary medicine therapies for relieving symptoms of menopause, such as Acupuncture & Homeopathy.
Cervical cancer screening is an essential part of a woman’s routine health care. It is a way to detect abnormal cervical cells, including precancerous cervical lesions, as well as early cervical cancers. Both precancerous lesions and early cervical cancers can be treated very successfully. Routine cervical screening has been shown to greatly reduce both the number of new cervical cancers diagnosed each year and deaths from the disease.
The most common symptoms of cervical cancer include:
Unusual vaginal bleeding | Vaginal discharge
|
Pain or discomfort during sexual activity | Pain in the pelvis |
You should consult a doctor if you notice a change that isn’t normal for you or if you have any of the possible signs and symptoms of cancer. The earlier cancer is detected, the higher the chance of successful treatment.
Investigations for cervical cancer include:
Pap Smear
A Pap smear is a test for cervical cancer or precancerous conditions of the cervix. The test is performed along with a pelvic exam and takes about five minutes to perform. Patients may experience slight discomfort and mild cramping.
Women should begin to have Pap tests at the age of 21 and continue to have the exam once every three years until the age of 65.
HPV Testing
HPV stands for Human Papilloma Virus. There are different types of HPV, some of which can cause cervical cells to change (become abnormal). Research has shown that testing for HPV is a more accurate way of finding people at risk of developing pre-cancerous changes.
Colposcopy
A colposcopy is a quick and easy way to find cell changes in your cervix that may turn into cancer. If any abnormal tissue is identified during the colposcopy, the next step in detecting cervical cancer would be to biopsy the tissue.
Cervical Biopsy
A cervical biopsy is a procedure to remove tissue from the cervix to test for abnormal or precancerous conditions, or cervical cancer. Some biopsy procedures only require local anesthesia, while others need regional or general anesthesia. The way the test is done may vary depending on your condition and on the specialist’s recommendations.
(In cases of positive family history)
Gynecological cancers are those that develop in a woman’s reproductive tract & breast. There are different risk factors for each type of cancer, including, in some cases, heredity. But many women develop cancer without being considered high risk. It’s important for women to be aware of the types of gynecological cancer, symptoms and potential warning signs to watch out for, and screening and prevention strategies. Early detection of cancer saves lives!
BREAST CANCER
Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer in women, and the second main cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer. Advances in screening and treatment have improved survival rates dramatically as a result of increased awareness for timely screening & detection.
Investigations:
- Clinical breast exam,
- Ultrasound breast & axilla
OVARIAN CANCER
While ovarian cancer accounts for about 3% of cancers among women, it causes more deaths than any other gynecological cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. The survival rates improve with early diagnosis but only about 20% of ovarian cancers are found at the early stage. The symptoms of ovarian cancer—including abnormal abdominal bloating, abdominal pain or pressure, and feeling full quickly when eating—can often be easily be ignored or mistaken for other problems.
Investigations:
- Ultrasound Ovaries and whole Pelvis
- Blood CA125 levels
UTERINE CANCER
While any woman can develop uterine cancer, high risk factors include age (being age 50 or older), obesity, taking estrogen alone as hormone replacement, and having a family history of uterine, ovarian or colon cancer.
It is important for women to be aware of red flag symptoms, such as abnormal vaginal discharge or bleeding and/or pain and pressure in the pelvic area.
Investigations:
Ultrasound for Endometrial thickness and whole Pelvis

Normal Delivery
We understand and support the desire to have a natural birth experience. That is why our experienced Obstetrician assists women to deliver in a compassionate, home-like environment while having access to the highest quality medical care they need.
Caesarian Delivery
Cesarean birth (C-section delivery) is the surgical delivery of a baby through incisions made in the uterus and abdomen. A C-section delivery can be planned or unplanned (sometimes referred to as an ‘emergency’ C-section), and may be an appropriate option in some circumstances.
Should you decide to have a C-section birth (or should one become medically necessary), our Obstetrician will take the time to ensure that you have a comprehensive understanding about all of your C-section birthing options, and that you are completely comfortable with making an informed decision.
Water Birth
Women who choose to deliver while immersed in warm water often celebrate the experience as a gentle way to bring their babies into the world – and one that may reduce the pain and duration of labor. However, it’s important to note that certain conditions, such as a breech presentation, an unusually large baby or signs of distress may rule out a water delivery.
Our specialist obstetrician will be with you at every step of the water birthing process, to assist you through your labor and to enhance your relaxation and comfort while prioritizing your and your baby’s health.
Charges for delivery packages are available upon request.
Antenatal classes can help expectant moms and their partners to prepare for the baby’s birth and give you confidence and information.
They’re usually informative and fun, and are a good way to make friends with other parents who are expecting babies around the same time as you. These friendships can help parents through the first few months with their new baby.
Classes are normally held twice a week for around 2 hours. In these classes, you can learn about:
- Staying healthy during pregnancy, with an emphasis on nutrition.
- Diabetes counseling for women who develop gestational diabetes during their pregnancy
- Making a birth plan with different arrangements for labor and birth
- Labor & Birthing workshops to prepare you and your partner for the experience
- Caring for your baby during your hospital stay and when returning home
- Breastfeeding techniques to make the experience rewarding and successful
- Emergency Workshop to prepare you and your partner to deal with child-related medical emergencies
As part of our antenatal package listed on page x, you & your partner will be invited for 2 complementary classes.
